Alexandria Brown House - Several Revolutionary War soldiers have been seen here. Gadsby's Tavern - A famous legend associated with this tavern had occured during the year 1816, when an unknown couple visited the town of Alexandria. The wife of the man was ill, so they decided to go to the tavern to seek help. Her husband had hired a doctor, but refused to give her name when asked who she was; shortly thereafter, the nameless wife died. After his wife died, he had left enough money for her medical bills and burial, and went away. In the heart of the town, her nameless grave marker can be seen. The staff of Gadsby's tavern and certain vistors have seen the unknown woman, while others reported seeing a lit candle in her room. Others have heard footsteps and a woman's cry. Located at the corner of Royal and Cameron Streets in Old Town Alexandria. Lee's Boyhood Home - The boyhood home of General Robert E Lee. Ghostly images of a young boy, two girls and a dog have been seen in different locations around the property and inside the house. Located on 607 Oronoco Street, 22314. Telephone: 703-548-8454. Ramsay House - The first house in the city, in which people have seen images of both the founder and first mayor staring through a window on the top floor. People have also seen ghostly figures in old period clothing down in the basement. Schaefer House - Paranormal screams or crying can be heard on top of the stairs, every night beginning at 2 am. Located on 107 North Fairfax Street, 22309. Woods Boarding School - During the Civil War, a trench was made connecting Union Forts through Virginia and Maryland. After the war was over, the trench began to be covered up by leaves, and foliage. Reports of sounds of soldiers and horses may be heard comming from the trench. The school itself use to serve as a Civil War hospital to the soldiers, and reports of screams could be heard. No ghost sightings are yet to be reported. Amelia Haw Branch Plantation - Many consider it as one of the most haunted places in America. Ghostly screams could be heard in the attic. A picture of a young woman is said to blush when looked at, as well as the smell of oranges that seem to fill parlor. Spirits can be heard on the footsteps of the stairway. Amherst Spring Hill or Tait House - Reports of heavy foot steps in the tunnels and up the stairs within the house. A bright light could be seen moving throughout the house going into the upstairs hall. The restless light is believed to be one of Tait's daughters in which her love for a man was dashed away because her father would not approve of the marriage between the two. Annandale Round Tree Park - Reports of a spectural woman holding her baby. A restless spirit which torments people who walk in the park at night. She is most visable when a fog appears. Arlington Cemetary Arlington Mansion - Eerie noises of children could be heard in the Morning Room. Sounds of footsteps are heard and candles are blown out in closed rooms. A ghost cat was also seen roaming the mansion. Ashland Randolph-Macon Colledge - Mary Branch girl's dormatory has had doors opening and closing by themselves, items that deemed missing appear again. Reports of two ghosts were reported by teachers on several occasions. Randolph-Macon Colledge - Sae Fraternity House has experienced ghostly noises, and the appearence of soldiers from the waist up were seen moving throughout the house. Randolph-Macon Colledge - A fraternity prank that went bad. During the 1980's a prank was played on a pledge member which was to place him in a box and set him next to the train rails and wait for a train. The pledge member was so shaken up that he supposedly died from a heart attack inside the box. Eerie cries for help have been heard, and a lonely boy has been seen walking by the site. Bedford House - A ghost of a woman was reported in front of a house which could have been hers at one time. The house is now owned by the Historical Society of Bedford. Located on Avenel Ave. Bowling Green Old Mansion Inn - The spirit of Colonel John Waller Hoomes still walks in his former home. The relentless screams of a woman are heard in the inn. Her death was supposedly caused by her husband in which he tried to frighten her. Bridgewater Bridgewater College Campus - Founded in 1880, the college was built on Native American hunting grounds. The college is believed to be haunted by Mr. Cole, which his spirit was spotted many times by musicians, and audiences. He is found seated in the balcony, and makes his presence known by flickering the lights after a performance. The reason for this is because he was pleased with the performance from the students. Bullrun Manasses Cobblestone Bridge - Ghosts of Civil War soldiers have been seen marching over the bridge at night. Charles City Berkeley Plantation - Along the fence, ghosts of a tall man and a drummer boy have been spotted walking to the cemetary. The sounds of drums are heard outside the plantation mansion. Located near Westover, 22 miles west of Williamsburg, on Hwy 5. Edgewood Bed & Breakfast Inn - The spirit of a woman looking through a window has been reported. Greenwood - The spirit of a man and a woman have been seen constantly in one particular room, the room therefor gets nicknamed, "The Haunted Chamber". Located on Hwy5, one half mile from the Courthouse. Sherwood Forest - The ghost of the lady in gray has been spotted on many occasions. She could be seen in the Gray Room, and sometimes seated in the rocking chair in the second floor nursery. Located on Hwy 5, northeast of the James River. Telephone: 804-786-4484. Shirley Plantation - A haunted painting of Martha Pratt hangs in a second-floor bedroom. When the painting was removed from its spot, it would shake violently. The painting was moved to the attic, to the first-floor, to the third floor, but it never stopped vibrating until it was placed back to its original spot. Charlottesville Ash Lawn Museum - A supposedly haunted rocking chair that caused such a disturbance that it has been locked away. Located five miles southeast of town on the east slope of Carter's Mountain. Mitchie Tavern - The sounds of someone partying on the third floor Ballroom has been heard for many years. Monticello - When the building is empty, one can hear humming, as if someone is singing, in various rooms. It is believed to be the former owner of the building. The image of a ghostly woman has been seen near the window of a bedroom. Located off Winterpock Road. Chilhowie CHS Hauntings - A school that is believe to have been built on an indian burial ground. The ghosts of these Indians have been seen wondering the school at night. Clifford Winton Country Club - A Spirit occupies one of the bedrooms. Telephone: 804-946-5134. Croaker House - It is said that in front of one particular house, the Ghost of Avenel may be seen walking. The woman is said to wear a long white dress and carry a parasol. Allegedly the woman used to live in the house that is now owned by the Bedford Historical Society. Location: 6 Mt. Zion Road. Elkton Elkton Police Department - In the basement which use to serve as a morgue, eerie sounds of footsteps and low moanings are heard. Located downtown. Fairfield McDowell Cemetery - The spirit of a headless man in a long overcoat has been seen trying to exit this old cemetery. Located about 300 feet of Hwy 11 between Lexington and Stuarts Draft. Farmville Curry Hall - It is said that a three year old boy rode his bicycle into the elevator shaft of this hall, falling to his death. It is reported that if one rides the elevator to the tenth floor and then to the basement, the boy's ghost will be seen when the doors open. Location: Longwood College Tabb Residence Hall - There is another set of ascending stairs. Supposedly, these stairs lead to an abandoned abortion clinic that was the site of a murder. Fork Union Careby Hall - A reddish fog has been seen in a room. It believed to be the image of Dr. William Hatcher, founder of Fork Union Academy. His spirit has been spotted in his old study and looking out an upstairs window. Footsteps are heard within the room along with the occasional sound of someone whistling a tune. 23055. Located at the junction of U.S.Hwy 15 and Hwy 6. Hatcher Hall - The spirit of a gray bearded man has been seen in the administration building. This is the main building on the campus. Fort Monroe ( Oldest Continually Garrisoned Fort in the United States ) Hotel Chamberlin - The image of a woman in white with light brown hair has been seen staring out the eighth floor storage room windows. Location from I-64, take exit 268 at Hampton, and follow the signs to Fort Monroe. Phone:804-723-6511. The Chamberlain - The Ghost of George Washington has been seen, along with others. The seventh floor of this building was closed to the public for the fear of spotting a ghost. Fort Monroe Old Fort Monroe And Casemate Museum - Most of the fort has some spirit within its buildings. Charlotte Street - The spirit of a woman in blue light, is seen without a head. She has been seen heading down this street toward Federal Hill. Location: the Spirit was reported in front of 507, 511, and 513. Chatham Manor - The Spirit of a woman returns every seven years on the anniversary of her death. Civil War Battlefields - A young African American about three to four years of age is seen sleeping three feet above the battlefields. Fredericksburg Battlefield - The moans of soldiers dying and in pain can be heard on this Civil War Battlefield. Location: 1013 Lafayette Blvd, 22405. Kenmore - The eerie sounds of someone's footsteps are heard pacing the downstairs hall. In one of the upstairs bedrooms, the image of a man in Revolutionary War attire has been seen. Located in Graves Corner, 13 miles east of Fredericksburg. Le Lafayette Restaurant - The noise of children playing and the image of a young child has been seen. Marmion - The ghost of a woman has been seen in one of the upstairs bedrooms, sighted walking down a flight of stairs, and sometimes spotted within the dining room. Located on Highway3. Monroe Law Office Museum - The Spirits of Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe have been seen here. Located at 908 Charles Street, 22401. Rising Sun Tavern - An unknown spirit who likes to pull pranks on people. One of its many pranks consisted of pulling the rug out from underneath the tour guide. Smythe's Cottage And Tavern - From this former Blacksmith's shop, the unknown sounds of iron being hammered on an anvil has been heard. Washington House - The sounds of a long skirt against the ground can be heard. In one report, a sighting of an unknown woman has been seen in the kitchen. Located on the corner of Charles Street and Lewis Street, 22401. Front Royal Prospect Hill Cemetery - UnknownInside the Soldier's Circle, lies a grave at which some claim to have seen a man kneeling and weeping; it is thought that he is saddened by his own death. Another woman has been seen dressed in attire from the mid 1880s. Her identity is not know, however. Location: unknownInside the Soldier's Circle Gloucester County Payton Hall - An evil spirit is suspected of the violent murders that occured here. After the building burned to the ground, screams can still be heard in the night. Located not far from Rosewell, near the York Plains Ford Battleground. Rosewell Plantation - The Page Family Mansion that was built in the early 1600's has had several generations live within it before it burned to the ground. The graveyard is found to the side of the house. Harpsichord music is heard coming from the ruins of this old mansion. A woman in red has been seen running toward the garden. And a Spirit has been seen coming down the old stairway. The sound of slaves can sometimes be heard comming from the grounds. Located near the confluence of the York River and Cater's Creek. There has been several recent Spirit sightings here. Hampton Chamberland Hotel - After a devastating fire that tore down the original hotel, a spirit of a girl was seen on the seventh floor of the rebuilt hotel, sometimes looking through a window. It is believed that she may have been caught in the fire, and could not escape. Her presence can be heard by the constant banging noises comming from the walls. Dental Office - The sound of an unknown drill being used is heard eventhough nobody is around to use it. Located at 1420 King Street, 23669. Ferenandez Studio - The wondering spirit of a man seems to be enjoying the photographs that are being produced. His presence becomes known when a cold spot is felt on one of the worker's shoulders. Location north King Street, 23669. Phone: 804-723-1297. Phoebus Fire Station - Unknown eerie sounds of someone playing pool has been heard. The footsteps of a ghost could be heard on the top floor. Located downtown. Hanover County Fork Church - Children's footsteps are heard in the second floor nursery. Located at tenth confluence of the North and South Anna Rivers. Hopewell Appomatix Manor - This Manor served as a hide out for both Confederate and Union soldiers. A legend associated with this house is believed to have started when a nurse tried to hide a Union soldier in the basement when the Confederates came to inspect the manor. During the search of the manor, the Confederates have found items belonging to Union soldiers. The Confederates arrested the Woman and took her away. The Union soldier however was left behind, and was unable to escape. He died in the basement. His scratches to free himself could be heard in the basement. During the reconstruction of the basement in 1953, workers had stumbled across what is believed to be the remains of that soldier. Jamestown Amblers' Colonial Mansion - The ghost Lydia Ambler haunts her home, and seems to be angry about something. Lebanon Confederate Graveyard - It is said that in this lost cemetery, there is a mysterious light. Allegedly, if one travels to the cemetery after dark, he will be confronted by a floating blaze. As one tries to escape, it is said the flame will follow, screaming in a very shrill voice. Location: unknown. Lexington Virginia Military Institute - The "Yellow Peril" is an MIS that appears as a phantom with a hideous yellow face and bleeding scar. It haunts the VMI barracks. Located near the junction of I-64 and I-81. 24450. Phone: 540-464-7211. Loudoun County Noland Ruins - The sounds of pounding hammers comes from these unfinished ruins. Located near Rogue's Road. Luray Old Corry House - The spirit of an unknown woman has been seen haunting the kitchen. This same spirit has been seen on the staircase. Located on Staunton Road. 22835. Lynchburge William Bass Elementary School - An evil feeling accompanies visitors, student, and faculty. Items seem to disappear and eerie strange voices are heard. Doors open and close by themselves. Finished beds become messed up and strange sounds of scratching within the walls are heard. A friendly spirit of a young woman has been encountered in rooms 50, 52, and 54. Telephone: 703-368-9191. Middletown Belle Grove Plantation Museum - The spirit of an African American woman has been seen by the fireplace while looking out a window. Telephone: 540-869-2028. Wayside Inn - Wayside is the oldest running inn in America. Room 14 is supposedly haunted in the inn, because guests felt very uneasy within the room. Mount Vernon Woodlawn Plantation - This Plantation Manor House has several reported Spirits. Located on the old Mount Vernon Estate. Just off of the Richmond Highway. Washington Plantation - The spirit of George Washington has been seen wondering about his former estate with his horse. Location: the estate covers a territory from Washington D.C to nearly WIlliamsburg. Phone: 703-780-2000. Newport News Carter's Grove Plantation - Within the Refusal Room, the only thing this evil spirit seems to disapprove of is white carnations. If left in this room, it will soon rip them to pieces. The Mansion is located outside the city limits of Newport News in James County. Norfolk Chesapeake Beach Volunteer Fire Department - The ghost of an ex-fireman has been spotted within the station. In some situations sirens are turned on by themselves, doors are slammed on vehicles, and fire alarms are raised for no reason. Located near Hwy 60 . 22455. U.S.Naval Shipyard - There are several areas of this shipyard that have reported hauntings. Seek out these areas: Buildings 29 and 31 for a Revolutionary War Soldier. Drydocks 1 and 2 for three british soldiers. Quarters B for a neat ghost who returns keys to their proper ace. The Uss Forestal for ghostly sailor. Location: I-564 leads to the center of the complex. Tours are available. Weslyn - A female spirit has been seen in the woman's residency. She is an angry spirit in which has been seen sitting in the chair, and either stares or follows anyone who gets their late, or those who decide to go to the bathroom. It is believed that she may have died in the bathroom. For an unknown reason she tends to frighten women from this college. Petersburg Centre Hill - Sounds of soldiers entering the building, running upstairs and returning out the front door occur evey January 24th, at exactly 7:30pm. Also, the spirit of a woman has been seen staring out the window above the front entrance. The Park is owned by the City and is located at the center of an eight hour park. Dodson's Tavern - Alarms go off for no reason. Books within the library have been found lying about as if they had been read. Located at 311 High Street. 23803. Poquoson Commons - There is a patch of ground where nothing can grow. It is believed it may be due to a Spirit Portal. Located at the center of town. Portsmouth Daughtery House - Levitating carpets, moving furniture, thrown items, and common violent acts used to be witnessed here before the house was torn down. Trinity Episcopal Church - Although no spirits have been reported here since the 1700s, this is the starting point for the Old Portsmouth Ghost Tours given the last Friday in October. Located near Hwy 156, southwest of Richmond Governor's Mansion - The friendly spirit of a woman is known to haunt hte stairway inside the mansion. Located off Lakeside Avenue, downtown. Hawes House - The spirit of a woman wearing grey has been spotted haunting this house. Located at 506 East Leigh Street, 23219. Hollywood Cemetery - An old cemetary that has presidents buried their. More than 18,000 people are buried, and sometimes moaning sounds come from certain graves. Also, the image of a cast-iron dog has been seen at the grave of a little girl who used to play with it. Manchester Rescue Squad Building - Evil spirits are known to haunt this building. Sounds of doors slamming and drummings within the wall are common. Located at 3213 Broad Rock Road, 23224. Reveille House - There are several reported Visiting Human Spirits in this old house turned church. Located behind the Reveille Methodist Church, Cary Street Road, 23220. State Capitol Building - The eerie sounds of crying and moaning seems to come from the walls. Located off Mechanicsville Turnpike in east-central Richmond. Talavera - An unknown spirit haunts this building. Many believe it is the Spirit of Edgar Allan Poe. Located at 2315 West Grace Street, 23220. Salem Fruit of The Bloom Winery - Three known buildings are known to be haunted. Unknown sounds of a man are heard. On occassion doors are known to slam, and chairs are reported to be moving. A small boy and an angry man have been seen here. Located on County Road 11460. It is identified by a sign. 24153. Name: none - During the rush to buy Christmas presents, the mother of the house dashed out, and forgot her son. When she realized what she had done, she quickly turned around and headed back to the house. She expected that her son would be in tears, for he was claustrophobic, but instead, he was in the kitchen drinking a glass of chocolate milk. When asked about how he got the milk, the son explained that a nice old lady said that his mommy would be home soon, and she prepared a glass of milk for him. He also told the police that he could see through the lady, and she looked exactly like a woman on a picture in the attic--a woman who lived in the home during the 1920s. Location: Main St. Smithfield Bacon's Castle - An orange Spirit Orb has been seen circling the old brick church and then entering the house through a garret window. Address is Bacon's Castle, 23430. Stafford County Aquia Church - This church is the site of a locally well known apparition. According to legend, a woman was murdered many years ago in the church's belfry. Stanton Virginia Aviation Museum - Eerie footsteps can be heard leading to certain planes, and an old stop watch that seems to start and the stop can be heard. Sweet Briar Sweet Briar College - The image of Miss Indiana Fletcher Jones has been seen in her old home, Mount San Angelo. Most have seen her near the upstairs fireplaces and in the dining room. No matter what type of music is played, they dance the minuet until they glide out into the garden. Located at the junction of Hwy 17 and Hwy 360. Linden House Inn ( Bed & Breakfast ) - Sounds of footsteps are heard on the third and fourth floors. Orange and Yellow Orbs are seen moving through the hallways. Virgina Beach Adam Thoroughgood House Museum - This home was built in 1636 and is considered the oldest brick building in the United States. Spirits are known to haunt this place and are believed to be the original occupants. Located at 1636 Parish Road, 23455. Tandom's Pine Tree Inn - The spirit of a woman is sometimes seen at night. Warrenton Old Gaol Jail Museum - Eerie sounds of someone walking has been heard. The spirit of a short white beared man has been seen in one of the old jail cells. Located on Warrenton Courthouse Square, 22186. West Point Cohoke Crossroads - An eerie light that approaches people, and suddenly disappears. It usually travels between the rails of the railroad tracks at Cohoke Crossroads. Located at the junction of Hwy 33 and Hwy 30. Take Exit 220 from I-64. The jail is near the Colonial Capitol. Goveneurs Mansion - The maze behind the mansion is believed to be a gateway for Civil War and Revolutionary War soldiers. Reports state that they wonder around the maze, confused by the confinement. The wall in front of the mansion is also believed to be haunted by a ghost that escaped from the Eastern State Mental Institution. This person in the 1920's slit a woman's neck. Magazine Building - A spirit of a soldier appears to be walking up the stairs to put his rifle away. Matthew Whaley Elementary School - Reports of two African American boys' spirits roam the school, believed to be from the 1960's. Located at 301 Scotland Street. Nicholson House - An unknown sounds of scratching can be heard within this house. Located on New York Street. Peyton Randolph House - The eerie sounds of moaning, and footsteps are reported. The spirit of a concerned young woman has been seen wringing her. She is reported in the red oak paneled bedroom at the rear of the building. The house faces Market Square. The Mill - Williamsburg's first serial killer is believed to have hid his victims within this building. The ghosts of these victims can be heard crying within the building. Well's Corner - The spirit of a man has been seen working on an antique car. Located at the intersection of County roads 631 and 610, also known as Forge Road. William and Mary:Tucker Hall - In early 1980, it is known that a girl had committed suicide, and that her restless spirit can be found roaming throughout the college. Wren Building - The Spirit of a French Revolutionary Soldier is believed to have died in this building, which was once a temporary hospital for the ill. An unknown force at one time disappeared when the grim remains of a 13 year old girl was found buried behind the walls. Wythe House - The spirit of a woman wearing red has been seen moving away from her closet. She was also known to be found sitting next to an old dressing table. Vianna Bunny Man Bridge - During the 1800s, a man went off to hunt for food. Upon return to his home, however, he discovered the mutilated bodies of his wife and child. Immediately, he summoned the sheriff. Since the bodies were so horribly mutilated and there were no other suspects, the husband was sent to a mental institution. Maintaining his innocence, the man vowed revenge. After escaping from the institution, the man took up residence near a bridge. Since the only clothes he owned were those made from rabbits' skin, he soon became known as the "Bunny Man." As time passed, children started playing near and around the Bunny Man. When several children came up missing, the authorities were notified. When they reached the bridge, officials saw body parts of the children hanging from trees; they also saw the Bunny Man being run over by a train. Today it is said that one may see body parts hanging from the trees and will hear the Bunny Man laughing. Virginia Beach Cavalier Hotel - This large hotel has been around since 1918. Reportedly, it is haunted by the ghosts of celebrities that stayed there during the earlier part of the century. There have been reports of strange noises and whispering voices. Some have also reported their towels being a different color than they were when they first entered the room. Location: 60 feet from the Atlantic Ocean. Yorktown Moore House - Mysterious depressions are seen on beds and a red velvet chair as if someone were there. Located at the Yorktown Battlefield in east Yorktown. York Hall - Spirits of unknown men, women and children have been seen here. Also, the unusual sound of someone sobbing on the third floor have been heard. Located on the corner of Main Street and Nelson Street. 23690. Yorktown Battlefields - Civil War ghosts are seen walking around the battlefields. Cannon fire can sometimes be heard during the dead of night. |
